Workshop (3 hours)–“Colonial Powder Horns: A Primer, Rare FWH Museum Powder Horns, and How to Sketch Them”

Eighteenth-century soldiers in the 13 Colonies often carried black powder for their muskets in powder horns. Some of those animal horns were engraved, a type of scrimshaw, and today are considered to be rare folk art. Those engravings included maps, inscriptions, dates, the name of the horn’s owner, and more. The workshop includes a primer on these artifacts, an opportunity to view FWH’s powder horn collection, and instruction on sketching powder horns from the F&I War and Rev. War. Class limited to 17 people. Cost: $20 (F&IWS@LG member), $50 (non-F&IWS@LG member). Tuition fee supports programs of the French & Indian War Society at Lake George. Workshop sponsored by the French & Indian War Society at Lake George and Fort William Henry Museum. Must be preregistered. Preregistration ends three days before workshop.
